Queen’s University Belfast is a public research university located in the capital of Northern Ireland, ranked 29th in the UK and 209th in the world according to the 2021 QS World University Rankings.

John Barry graduated from University College Dublin and later served as a lecturer at Keele University while pursuing postgraduate studies at the University of Glasgow. He joined Queen's University Belfast as a faculty member in 2000. Barry has served as Acting Director of the Institute for Governance, Public Policy, and Social Research at Queen’s University Belfast. From January to June 2007, he was the Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professor of Political Science at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Currently, he is a lecturer in political science and the Assistant Director of the Institute for the Study of Sustainable Worlds at the School of Politics, International Studies, and Philosophy, with over 20 years of teaching experience.

Professor John Barry has an impressive body of research spanning across political science, economics, environmental issues, and sustainability, demonstrating his interdisciplinary research capabilities. In recent years, he has focused on topics such as sustainable development economics, environmental ethics and policy, green economics, and renewable energy, authoring several books and academic papers on these subjects. Additionally, he is the co-editor of two academic journals, Environmental Politics and Ecopolitics Online.
